Tarot

Major Arcana | Wands | Cups | Swords | Pentacles

When you enter the game, you’ll be in the Parlor, where the Oracles will draw a card for you. This card serves to describe your character’s personality, dictate which side of the magic vs. technology conflict they’re on, open the doors to the compound for their side and their private room, and grant them unique powers. Although cards can be lost or stolen, they’ll only work for the one they were drawn for.

All Minor Arcana (suit) cards have elemental associations, and bestow some level of elemental power. The form that power takes is up to the character, and card-related effects are informally referred to as ‘card tricks’. Card tricks may or may not carry over when a character has their card redrawn (see the rules and the FAQ for more information on redraws) — it depends on how compatible the new card is with the old. Going from Cups to Wands, for instance, won’t leave you with much to carry over — fire and water are completely different elements, with completely different powers. When in doubt, ask the mods.

Students of tarot may notice a few differences from traditional interpretations — for explanations and tarot-geeking, see the wiki page on interpretations.

That said, you don’t have to know anything about tarot in order to participate in the game. Knowledge of tarot symbolism may add an extra layer of meaning, but it’s not necessary to enjoy the plot.

Major Arcana

Major Arcana cards are the big guns of the War. Each card represents an archetype, from which it draws its power, instead of the elemental associations of the Minor Arcana. This gives you a lot more leeway with your powers, but it comes at a price — you’re tied to the role you’ve been given (though no Major Arcana cards will be issued without the mun having the final say on the choice of card), and acting against that role will cost you your powers.

No one starts the game with a Major Arcana card: as powerful as they are, your character will have to earn them in-game. For more on the Major Arcana, including how to reserve a card, go here.
